This summer Dr. Maruko invited physical therapist, Lloyd Cotton, from Orange County Rehab, to our office to learn about ways that patients can help themselves when they have TMJ clicking or popping. He has suffered from severe TMJ pain himself and was very generous to share his knowledge with us. Of people that see the dentist for jaw problems, about 80% have to do with muscles. About twenty percent are more serious problems that should be evaluated by a professional. The list of things that could cause jaw pain is over a thousand, so listen to your body. If it is a long standing problem then seek help, after six months it is considered chronic pain and may have an element of depression related to it.
Dr. Maruko has also suffered from TMD herself and gained insight from sources that range the gamut of health care. She is a firm believer of the mind body connection. This information is a place to start and should not be viewed as a substitute for professional advice. Any health care concerns should be addressed with a professional.
