MARUKO MONARCH PROJECT

#SavetheMonarchs

A Personal Project by Dr. Evelyn Maruko

Saving a Species, One Seed at a Time

This is a monarch butterfly.

Looks like any ordinary butterfly, right?

Well, the monarch butterfly is unique in the way it exhibits the most highly evolved migration pattern of any known species of butterfly, moth, and perhaps any known insect.

Problem is, they're pre-endangered and pretty soon, could find themselves in the endangered category! :(

What's this about?

Why are they pre-endangered?

See those purple flowers?

That's native milkweed, a monarch butterfly's food. An increase in herbicide use and a variety of factors is decreasing the availability of their primary food.

No milkweed, no monarch caterpillars. No monarch caterpillars, no monarch butterflies.

Oh no! :(

We know, this milkweed shortage is terrible for the monarchs.

That's where the Maruko Monarch Project comes in and YOU get to help! :)

Dr. Maruko on Her County-Wide Project

Hello & thank you for stopping by!

The monarch butterfly is now on the pre endangered species list. Through this project, I hope to encourage everyone to plant native milkweed in their garden. No milkweed, no monarch caterpillars. No monarch caterpillars, no monarch butterflies.

I want to make this a grass roots effort to help the monarch one garden, one plant, one seed at a time. I want to share the simple joy seeing a monarch butterfly spread its wings and take flight for the first time and bring the beauty and wonder nature into our every day lives.

I hope that together, we can all share in the joy of helping the monarch thrive once again!
